Electric Vehicle Application

Testimonial

Testimonial From Bob Boyd about his experience using Can-PULSE on an electric vehicle.

September 23, 1999

Hi Doug:

Well I finally have something definitive to report on the use of the Can PULSE. to refresh you on my battery pack, it is 16 yellow top Optima factory seconds with no warranty, (due to leakage at the negative post), purchased in early 1997 and first used in May 1998. They all balanced out nicely in the MR-2 after 5 or 6 cycles. All batteries were within .1volt of each other after charging and were at 12.7 to 12.8 volts.

I installed the Can PULSE you sent me in Dec. 1998. Since that time I have driven the car about 3500 miles and got involved in a multi motored dragster. I sort of forgot to check on the batteries in the MR-2 as it was performing flawlessly. Until about 2 months ago. I noticed my pack voltage was not coming up to normal full voltage at the end of a charge cycle. After checking individual battery voltages I found that my # 4 battery was only at about 10 volts. One cell had reversed. I then looked at the batteries and found that almost every one of them were badly corroded around the negative post. My wife and I removed all of the batteries and cleaned them up and used anti corrosion paint on the terminals and replaced them in the car. The # 4 battery which is one of the hardest to get at was replaced by one of the 2 spares that I got when I purchased the pack. Since then I have been trying to get #4 to catch up to the rest of the pack by giving it an individual topping off charge at 14.7 volts after the rest of the pack has finished charging.

Yesterday , 09-22-99, 24 hours after performing the above procedure, I checked the voltage of the individual batteries. #4 was at 12.8 volts. All the rest were at 13.1 volts except 2 which were at 13.0.

Conclusion: After nearly a year of use and abuse of the battery pack, and charging with the Can PULSE, ( the individual topping charge of #4 can not be done with the Can PULSE in line), the original pack voltage has increased from 12.8 to 13.1 volts.

I will be very interested in finding out how long this situation will last.

Well Doug this is about as long as I can stand to type, so I will thank you again for the Can PULSE and will let you know when I have something else to report on.

Regards as always,

Bob Boyd
